1957 High-fructose corn syrup invented.
1975 Average American annual consumption: 70 lbs. of sugar, 4 lbs. HFCS.

2009 Average American annual consumption: 45 lbs. of sugar, 39 lbs. of HFCS.
Also, I haven’t read it, but the book, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” is all about how corn dominates the average American’s diet, due to corn syrup, and corn being used as feed for other animals. Apparently, you consist of 90% corn or something.
