April 2007 Entries
More than 100 US troops were killed in Iraq in the month of April.  Today I saw a bumper sticker that read "Is it Vietnam yet?"  If not now then soon.

We can save the planet.
And what better time to celebrate Earth Day than in a time when the earth needs our attention more than ever.  Maybe every day should be Earth Day.   It sounds like "green" rhetoric but it's true.  And it is so easy to forget about it sometimes.  As technology advances the Earth is thrown by the wayside.  People who care about the environment are branded as "tree huggers", a derogatory term that was first used to describe followers of Gandhi who opposed commercial logging in India.  And while most people would probably say that they care about the environment or oppose pollution nobody would like to be branded as a tree hugger.  In the meanwhile it is a fact that man's actions at least contribute to the unusual warming we see across the globe, and billion dollar corporations spread misinformation and lies branded as science.  And while we're at it,  bees are dying out worldwide.  As Bill Maher quotes Einstein in his recent blog post:
"'...if the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.' Well, guess what? The bees are disappearing. In massive numbers. All around the world."

The Earth is delicate and humankind no longer belongs to it.  It belongs to us and sometimes it seems we have forgotten it.  Some of us even mock those who care about it and others put money before it.   It can't go on.  And it won't be easy to change.  But maybe if the next time you hear someone use "tree hugger" to describe an environmentalist you call them out for their ignorance, we can start to change the perception of those who care about the place we share.

There is not much sense that can be made out of such a senseless massacre.  May our prayers go out to the individuals and families affected. I hope that in this time of angst and shock for so many the advocates for gun-control and the advocates for the second amendment will exercise restraint and not politicize this tragedy.  To do otherwise is obscene.

You may notice from time to time that I turn off comments for a post that is older than seven days old.  While I normally don't get comments after seven days anyway, the reason I do this is there are spam bots that like to promote cheap pharmaceuticals and other such filth in my comments.  It seems that turning off the comments for a week or two fixes the problem temporarily.  There are spam blocking utilities like captcha support and such if I upgrade to the new subtext version, but it seems to work if I turn off the comments for a while.  So heads up, the comments are now off for posts seven days old or more.

Check out this quick list of environmental tips from Howstuffworks.com.  They are all easy to follow and require a small amount of commitment to make a difference.  I especially like number 9.   You should see the funny looks I get going the speed limit on the highway.  I laugh to myself at all those suckers burning fuel.  I can definitely see the difference in the gas gauge.

I haven't been posting much as of late, but there have been a few stories bouncing around in my head.  The media's criticism of Nancy Pelosi's visit to Syria is one of them and seems a bit unfounded considering she is being blasted despite a Republican trip to the same region.  Better to bury your head in the sand.

Also, John McCain took a leisurely stroll in Baghdad to prove that the streets were safe to walk on.  Besides the armed guards and bulletproof vest, there is the small matter that 10 U.S. troops were killed there over the weekend.  But John McCain says its safe so it must be so. (Oh, and take a look at the man's website for Pete's sake and tell me if it doesn't look like something Orwellian, or at least out of Gotham City.)

An article in The New Yorker about some fishy tactics being used by army recruiters caught my attention.  According to one recruiter you are more likely to be gunned down in the streets of D.C.  than to be killed in Iraq.  But the truth is those numbers don't add up.

And lastly there is this article that talks about the epic collapse of the Bush administration. (The irony of it being in Time is not lost on me...)  I whole heartedly agree with the article.  Lets review:

  1. Guantanamo
  2. State sponsored torture
  3. Illegal wire taps
  4. IRAQ!!!
  5. Walter Reed
  6. Improper firing of U.S. attorneys

And I am sure the list goes on.  Feel free to add any more you can think of in the comments.
