In a true display of jaw-dropping nutjobbery, Katherine Harris, Representative of the 13th ward in Florida, has declared separation of church and state to be "a lie," and that God did not intend for the U.S. to be a nation of secular laws.  In case you don't remember Katherine Harris, she presided over the highly contested 2000 presidential election recount despite obvious conflicts of interest.  She was co-chair of Bush's Florida campaign. Her new rhetoric sounds more in line with religious fundamentalism than main-stream Christianity. Let's hope that the good people of the 13th ward (the fighting 13th!) vote her out of office.  That kind of all or nothing stance has no place in congress.

Whacko.

In a victory for civil liberty and free speech a court ruled that it was unconstitutional for a middle school to ban a student's shirt which depicted Bush along with a martini glass and some cocaine.  The shirt also contained some verbal judo about the prez being "a chicken-hawk-in-chief" and a "lying drunk driver."  Score one for the middle schooler.

Erstwhile an airline passenger was not as lucky.  While trying to board a plane with a shirt that said "We will not be silent," in English as well as Arabic, the man was confronted by airport security who insisted he change his shirt.  Apparently several paranoiac passengers had been frightened not knowing what the shirt said, probably imagining "Death to the infidels!" or "I heart terrorists."

Just so were straight:

         Cocaine Bush?  All good.
         Arabic? Not so much.

More good news from the alternative energy department.  Franklin County Iowa could be the home of a massive wind farm.  Iowa winds LLC is looking to develop 40,000 acres at a cost of 200 million.  Here's rooting for Iowa.  Stories like this should become more prevalent if my high school economics teacher was right.  As demand for clean energy goes up, some opportunistic companies should  create the supply.

A hydrogen backup power system has been installed in an environmental education center in Maine eliminating the need for gas powered generators.  In case of a power outage hydrogen power keeps the center going including heat lamps that keep several reptiles warm.  The system is the first of it kind in the nation. Hoorah for alternative energy!  It's like an old German proverb that a high school teacher taught me:  "Said the old lady who peed in the ocean, 'every little bit helps.'" :P

Much fanfare over the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.  A lot of finger-pointing from both sides of the fence.  In my eyes, tragedy shouldn't be exploited for political gain especially when nature is to blame.   Could the evacuation have been handled better?  Sure, but what's important is to look towards the future.  By far the best thing I read today was a Slate article quoting a blog:

"DJ Drummer, a conservative New Orleans native writing at Wizbang, says that playing the blame game is counterproductive. 'Life is cruel sometimes,' he writes, 'You get good, you get bad, and not usually because you deserve it. What most of us do is get by and try to get better, and sooner or later the folks who got hit by Katrina will find their way. It will be tough, and probably not fair, but in the end you get what you make. You don't owe anybody, but NOBODY OWES YOU, either.'"

Hear, hear.

This is great.  Two-hundred some odd people wandered into a Home Depot in Manhattan for some Uncle-Sam-Easy-Kesey style bozo tricks.  All their watches were synchronized and at a certain moment they all started to go in slow-mo for five minutes.  They returned to normal speed for five minutes and then froze in place for five minutes.  It makes for some interesting video.  Here is what the slow motion part looks like at 5x speed.  Notice the rest of the world whizzing by as the slow-mo shoppers appear to go in normal speed.

There has been an interesting study that ties in with effects of global warming on our tiny little rock. As Franti put it, "The seasons don't ever come on time no more..."  European scientists have examined 571 species and have shown that spring comes 6 to 8 days earlier on average.  These changes could have effects on the ecosystem.  FTA:

"For example, caterpillars feed on oak trees, and birds feed on the caterpillars. Unless these species remain synchronised, there could be problems for any one or more of those elements of the food web."

Obviously our planet is an ever-changing animal, but these changes are happening at unprecedented rates.  Get ready for a warmer future.  In a few years we could be talking about a booming Canadian real estate market.

Okay, just a quick post before I go to bed.  The New York Times is reporting that the G.O.P., that grandest of grand old parties is criticizing American intelligence agencies for not finding more incriminating evidence against Iran.  This is an obvious attempt to drum up support for a war with Iran.  This seems just like the pre-Iraq War days when the W.M.D.'s could not be found, but the administration and complete assholes like Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz insisted we go to war.   I'm calling Shenanigans.  You can't just make up things in order to fit the story as you wish to perceive it.  It's faulty logic.  From the article:

“It reflects a certain way of looking at the world — that all evil is traceable to the capitals of certain states,” said Paul R. Pillar, who until last October oversaw American intelligence assessments about the Middle East. “And that, in my view, is a very incorrect way of interpreting the security challenges we face.”

I recently purchased Michael Franti & Spearheads, Yell Fire!, an uplifting album about war, the environment, love, politics, news, music and so many other of Franti's views that shape his music.  But I was disheartened when I couldn't find the lyrics to any of his songs online so I decided to transcribe a song that I particularly enjoy, I Know I'm Not Alone.  Stay tuned if you are a Franti fan, for I may generate a series of pages with all the lyrics on his new album.  Here ya go:

What ever happened to the sun?
It used to always come
Like when we were young
We'd sing and party all night long
The seasons don't ever come on time no more
And war paints over the years
And anger fills our tears
What happened to the sun?

But I know I know I know I'm not alone
And I know I know I know I'm not alone

Every time I read the news
I 'm always more confused
They're telling me to choose
But there's only lies to choose from
And how many died today
And how many lost their homes and shot a gun
Or a loved one?
What happened to our sons?

But I know I know I know I'm not alone
And I know I know I know I'm not alone
Even though I'm far from home I'm not alone not alone
Even though I'm far from home I'm not alone
Whoo hoo hoo hoo
 Whoo hoo hoo hoo

(spoken)
 Walk to the front
Open the gate
I see you right there
(/spoken)

Even though I'm far from home I'm not alone not alone
Even though I'm far from home I'm not alone not alone
Even though I'm far from home I'm not alone

Whoo hoo hoo hoo (x5)

What's the opposite of progress?  Here is an article in The Christian Science Monitor about what the Lieberman primary loss actually means.  From the article:

Too much can easily be read into Lieberman's primary defeat. But perhaps it really is the signal of a political shift toward institutional reform that would outlast the current national debates over the Iraq war or the Bush presidency.

One can only hope.

I just watched part one of a three part series about the events leading up to the current world order.  It is a BBC documentary. I think it's worth a look.  Oddly enough, one man's twisted interpretation of Gun smoke, and Perry Mason, may have a lot to do with Bush's campaign of terror.

Okay. Now I have just watched part two of the series. I implore you to watch this. As Americans, the people who control their own fate, it is important to be knowledgeable about the forces that guide our lives. These films are about the dichotomy between the Neo-conservitive movements within our own country and the Islamic Jihad and how they play off one another. It is a story of delusion. These two groups create there own mythology then begin to believe it themselves. Please, watch the videos. I will post the third after I view it.

I guess the verdict is in. Terrorism is a very real threat, but the severity is exaggerated by our government and our media. Fear generates votes, and it generates ratings in our post 9/11 era. But in a twisted synergy between all the wrong parties, our perception of terrorism becomes unfounded and unhealthy towards our public policy both foreign and domestic. In my humble opinion the only thing we can do to fight this vicious cycle is to educate ourselves and approach the situation with an open mind. Kind of a hard thing to do with the amount of misinformation that is floating about.

Last night was a wonderful evening at the Koka Booth Amphitheater at Regency Park in Cary.  Bela Fleck and the Flecktones headlined the show, with Umphrey's McGee and Marc Broussard as the supporting cast.  Never heard of Marc Broussard before but he has a tremendously soulful voice and I'll be sure to check him out again.  It was a great experience. The music never stopped as the bands switched positions fluidly.  The encore was twenty minutes long at least and consisted of all three acts on the stage jamming away.  Some highlights were Little Wing by Jimmy Hendrix, Come Together by the Beatles (with Marc Broussard on vocals with The Flecktones) and a Who Knows? jam (another Hendrix tune) by Umphrey's.

I finally got the internet in my new place.  I took the plunge and moved in with Meghann.  It's a little cozy, but cozy isn't a bad thing.  I have a space for my desk and now we have cable and internet.  The apartment itself is in a great location inside the belt line.  Some of the neighboring houses date from the late 1800's to the early 1900's.  There are also some modern jobs from the 1950's.  All in all it is an eclectic feel that makes our little apartment complex seem not so out of place.  I think I am going to like it here.

Gotta be honest, I didn't get much sleep last night. And I've been looking at network testers all day when I came up with this little beauty.  It is the "in Decatur indicator"
indecaturindicator.jpg
And why not?  As a quick search on wikipedia tells me there are many Decatur's across this fine country that one may unknowingly wander into.
Just to name a few.  So don't be caught unaware.  Order your in Decatur indicator today! (individual results may very)

In a move of incalculable political sleaziness, Senator Lieberman has connected the foiled terrorist plot with his opponent Ned Lamont.  Lamont may not be correct in his assertion that we need to pull out of Iraq, but connecting Iraq with  a terrorist plot hatched by extremist British citizens is a stretch.  Statements such as, “We cannot deceive ourselves that we live in safety today and the war is over, and it’s why we have to stay strong and vigilant,” and, "[the enemy is] more evil, or as evil, as Nazism and probably more dangerous than the Soviet Communists we fought during the long Cold War,” sounds like the same rhetoric that the Republicans touted in 2004.  Unfortunately scare tactics in politics seem to be the flavor of the day in Washington and beyond.

It's not that funny when you think about it.  Exxon toasts the planet.

More news from the department of the slight of hand.  A Reuters reporter has been blacklisted from the news agency due to a couple of doctored photographs submitted for purchase.  The photographers name is Hajj and he has admitted to adding a plume of smoke to a building in Lebanon by cloning smoke from a neighboring building.  Apparently the hack job was so obvious that "an amateur could have done better," according to an interview given to the BBC. In war, I believe images speak for themselves.  What ever happened to integrity in journalism? (Edit:  Upon reflection, there probably never has been.)

There has been a video on youtube that has generated a little bit of press recently. It is a short two minute clip poking fun at Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth. It looks like the work of an amateur bonehead, but as it turns out it is much more devious than that:

The original video isn't funny, screams of ignorance and carries an uncouth belligerent aura. The fact that it was made by a PR firm funded by some shadow organization makes it downright creepy. And the story gets juicier:

Trademark violation! Let's hope that somebody is held accountable for this abomination.

This is poignant and hilarious at the same time. Perhaps Bush's facial expression when he says "bloody" reveals something inherent to his character.

You may have noticed the banner in the upper right portion of this site.   Stopglobalwarming.org is a virtual march that is over 450,000 people strong.  The idea is simple.  You enter your email address and zip code and they generate for you your own web page where you can keep track of how many people you have influenced and even if you wish, how much carbon you have saved from going into the atmosphere by changing your day to day actions. Even more importantly you add to the total count of people who have joined.  500,000 voters is nothing to scoff at.  And the beauty of it is that you aren't required to enter your mailing address so there is no need to worry about unsolicited mail, and you can also opt out of email updates.  So what's the big deal?  Sign up and you can even upload a picture of yourself for your page.  Here's my page.  Click the link, the picture is worth it.  Some other notables are Laurie and Larry David, Gen. Wesley Clark, John McCain, Al Gore, and most importantly Leonardo DiCaprio.

Here is Mr. Hawkings response to the answers he received to his question. It cuts off at the end but I believe it is worth while to watch it. Also, sorry about changing the appearance of the site so much, but I just can't decided on what it should look like.

A while ago I posted about Stephen Hawking asking Yahoo! Answers how the planet will survive the next one hundred years. C|Net is reporting that Mr. Hawking will  pick the best answer and it will be released on Yahoo! Video tomorrow, Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006.  Apparently he had to sort through a bunch of great answers like, "Don't worry! When things get really bad, the rapture will happen. Then the apocalpyse.  (sic) Then moving into space and stuff won't really matter, because all the sinners will be dead." Let's just hope the plan for saving humanity doesn't include that guy.
